The novel explores these two themes closely as we are taken an a journey through around camp green lake with Stanley, a character who has been wrong fully accused of stealing a pair of sneakers. Through the techniques ideas of characterisation setting and themes, the author is successful in communicating different ideas about power. The first technique is characters in holes are used to show how different people have different levels of power. Stanley, the main character is described as being overweight, shy and unpopular. And he was innocent of the crim for which he was convicted. Stanley was a given a choice by the judge, ‘’you may go to jail, or you may go to camp green lake.’’ (Chapter 2, page 5). He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Whenever something went wrong Stanley’s family would always blame Stanley’s no –good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great—grandfather because of his awful luck and hopeless luck. The warden is very different character who is described as powerful, mean and unjust and the only rule was in the camp green lake is ‘don’t upset the warden’ , the warden was feared by many of the kids , because she pushing the boys to work harder . the evidence of her being powerful is in (chapter 1 page 3 )’’ the Warden owns the shade’’ X-ray, one of the boys Stanley’s makes friends with at camp green lake is described as powerful person in the powerless group. He earned a day off because Stanley gave the lid lip stick X-ray said to Stanley that he should give whatever he finds to him because he has been there for a year and he deserves the day off more than he does, so the warden lets X-ray have the rest of the day off, a double shower and a clean set of clothes and she also orders Mr.Pedanski to fill all the canteen with water. The evidence of these is when X-Ray said ‘’ if you find something else give it to me, okay?’’. (ch.11, Pge52) All of these characters demonstrate that power is not distributed evenly in camp green lake and highlight that in society, people can feel powerful and powerless depending on their experiences. The second technique, setting is used to show how the boys experience very unfair and uncomfortable condition during their time at camp green lake. The name of the camp is ironic because the lake is actually dry and brown. Camp green lake name’s fall somewhere between a joke and a curse, nothing is green there and there is no lake, its full-blow desert. ‘’the average temperature in the shade is 95 degrees’’ (ch1, page 3), and the boys have a very difficult life there because they work hard and they didn’t have a rest time just when they find something they will take a day off like X-ray. And they were sleep in coat, get 4 minute shower and relax in a recreation room where ever thing is wrecked. Mr. Sir makes the bandage out of his sunflowers seeds sack and tells Stanley to go right back to work â€Å"it is not nap time.’’ (ch 17 page 78). Sacher creates barren setting to emphasise how the boys at camp were mistreated and that sometimes in life, people are powerless to their living conditions. The third technique that made Holes such an effective novel for students to read is dialogue; dialogue is used by Sacher to communicate all of the emotions felt by the character at different points in the story. When Stanley talks to Zero about teaching Zero how to read, but Stanley rejects Zero’s request. But then after awhile Zero dagged Stanley’s hole while he was away so Stanley found out that he have the power over Zero with simply teaching him. On the other hand Stanley has justice between him and Zero because their deal was to dig hole for Stanley and in exchange he teaches Zero. An evidence of this is when Stanley said â€Å"I’ll try to teach you to read†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Ch.22.Pg.96) he expresses what he will do and how much f ability he will put to teach Zero. Therefore, dialogue is the most effective technique in Holes and that the novel Holes is an important novel for students to study while learning about power and justice. Trauma Informed Care Trauma informed care pertains to organization or programs that services individuals who have survived a traumatic experience. These individuals or survivors are those who have been physically and/or sexually abuse and other experiences that leads to trauma. Often times, these experiences may direct an individual to mental health and some other type of disorder. Organizations that help people with this condition, alters and adjusts in order to keep an understanding on how trauma affects the individual seeking for help (SAMHSA National Mental Health Information Center). Theories in Social Work â€Å"Theories have been developed since it became clear that there were similar patterns or repeating cycles of behaviour both in an individual’s life and in the lives of lots of different people (Towland, 2010). † There are a lot of theories or ideas on how to go about social work and how to do the practice for both professionals and students taking up this course. According to Towland in his essay on â€Å"Social Work Theory and Practice – Making the Links† a theory is seen to help describe what is happening, explain why it is happening and predict what will happen next. Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. India is amongst the top water polluters in the world. Since several decades, industrial wastes like chemicals, oils and other poisonous things are discharged into the rivers in large quantities. In India, rivers have a great religious importance and they are considered holy. People travel miles to bathe in these rivers. Due to these pollutions, the water which was considered ‘Amrita’ (Immortal Drink) has now certainly become poison. Till some extent bathing in the river does cause water pollution but there are other several religious rituals like ‘Visarjan’ and flowing of Asthiya. Not just the religious customs but even the sewage is drained into these rivers. People even wash their clothes in the river. It has been found that expired medicines and used injections are thrown into the rivers. Out of the 1400 km of the river Yamuna, 600 km from Panipat to Etawa has been officially declared to be dead (this means this stretch of the river has 0% dissolved oxyg en meaning that neither can water support any type of life nor is it suitable for any kind of use). Experts have found out through surveys that the level of coliform (harmful bacteria) in water to be a dangerous 50 in 100ml in drinking water. For bathing water, it is an approximate of 500 per 100ml. More than 500 means that the water is not even fit for bathing and it has been found that Delhi’s level of coliform is between 9,000,000 and 10,000,000. This is the condition of the capital city; it can be assumed that in other parts of the country the conditions are worse. Even though the Indian government has introduced many acts outlawing water pollution it is unable to enforce it strongly and people are still dumping wastes into water. Industrial wastes are also dumped into the ground by injecting them deep inside, this pollutes the underground freshwater. In India water pollution in itself is a major issue, but it is also impacting on the health of the people. The industrially polluted water is treated by ordinary techniques, which still are not able to filter out the heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. This water is used in agricultural practices, and the produced crops for example the fruits and vegetables contain these poisonous substances in small quantities which can cause health problems like: Lead: affects the IQ level of kids. Mercury: affects people’s brains. It also affects pregnant women and maybe passed on to their children through blood and breast feeding. This may also lead to mutation. I all personally face a lot many problems due to water pollution. As I live in Rajkot, a city which lies within the watershed expansion of Aji riverbasin and it is a network of 19 natural drainage courses, loally known as ‘Voklas’. Unfortunately these voklas are being used for sewage disposals resulting in pollution of Aji –river in downsream of Aji dam, which collects the water from Aji and Nyari river, therefore both the dams are fully polluted. An analysis of different water bodies in downstream of Aji dam indicates the most of water bodies within city limit are contaminated. Researchers have found a positive correlation between CSR and financial performance of the organization. Around the globe, a good commitment is being shown by the banking industry to CSR principles. Banks are showing conscious efforts to reduce the regulatory actions by depicting a good environmental citizen image. Banking in India has originated in the last decades of the 18th century with the establishment of General Bank of India in 1786, and the Bank of Hindustan set up in 1870 (both banks are now defunct). At present, the commercial banking structure in India consists of Scheduled Commercial Banks Unscheduled Banks. Banking in India has evolved in four distinct phases: Foundation phase, Expansion phase, consolidation phase and Reforms phase. An integrated approach of combining CSR with the ultimate customer satisfaction is being adopted by Indian banking industry voluntarily. An attempt has been initiated to ensure social responsible behavior of banking sector in a more systematic manner. Conclusion The CSR moment in the banking sector is slowing picking the pace. Many banks are showing their inclination and interest towards the CSR activities and believe it as their social responsibility. On the other side CSR reporting practices are far from satisfaction. There are hardly few banks which report their activities on triple bottom line principles. The lack of uniform standards for rating CSR practices leads to problem in comparison of corporate houses and difficulty in determining the CSR rating. In spite of the slow adaptation of CSR reporting practices in India, it is predicted to pick up a great pace in near future. The seeds were treated with different salt concentration solutions of sodium chloride, magnesium sulphate, calcium sulphates and bicarbonates. A Chi Squared test was done to find the relationship between each of the different salts concentrations and the germination rate. Experimental Hypothesis: Increasing the concentration of NaCl (sodium chloride) will have the biggest decrease in the number of germinations compared to increasing the other salt concentrations. Null Hypothesis: Increasing the salt concentration will have no effect on the germination of seeds. Dependent Variable: Seed germination rate Independent Variable: The salt solutions and salt concentration Through my intensive research I discovered there were currently major environmental factors regarding to the lack of plant productivity for crop production regions, but through this research I discovered one of the main factors was salinity in soil.
